Percy the Pig was mud-lover. He adored rolling in it, squishing it between his trotters. He thought he was the only one who truly understood the joy of a good, messy mud bath until he met Elle, the elephant.
One sunny afternoon, Percy was happily wallowing in his favorite mud puddle, humming a little piggy tune. Suddenly, he heard a loud sploosh! He peeked through the muddy fringe that covered his eyes and saw something HUGE and gray.
It was Ellie the Elephant! And she was playing in the dirt. Not just any dirt, but a big, dusty patch of earth. She was kicking up clouds of dust with her giant feet, flapping her ears, and trumpeting with glee.
Percy was astonished. He'd never seen an elephant play in the dirt before! He scrambled out of his mud puddle, his little piggy heart filled with curiosity. He trotted over to Ellie, leaving muddy footprints behind him.
"Ellie," he squeaked, "why are you playing in the dirt? Don't you know mud is much better?"
Ellie stopped kicking up dust and looked at Percy with her big, kind eyes. "Oh, hello Percy!" she trumpeted. "I love playing in the dirt! It's so much fun to feel the earth between my toes."
Percy tilted his head. "But... but it's just dry dirt," he said, wrinkling his snout. "It doesn't squish or ooze like mud."
Ellie smiled. "That's true," she said, "but it feels different. It's dry and dusty, and when I kick it up, it tickles my trunk!" She wiggled her trunk playfully.
Percy had never thought about dirt like that. He'd always thought mud was the only way to play. He watched as Ellie kicked up more dust, her trunk swaying like a playful snake. He noticed how the sunlight made the dust sparkle like tiny golden stars.
"Can I try?" Percy asked, his eyes wide with excitement.
Ellie nodded. "Of course!"
Percy stepped into the dusty patch and kicked his little trotters. A cloud of dust puffed up around him. He giggled. It did tickle! He kicked again, and again, and again!
Soon, Percy and Ellie were both covered in dust, laughing and playing together. Percy discovered that dry dirt was actually quite fun! It was different from mud, but just as exciting.
