Deep in the heart of a sunny meadow, a small bird was out for her morning flight. As she swooped down toward a patch of soft clover, she saw something incredible. Tucked right between two mossy stones was a giant, pearly-white egg. It was so big that if the bird sat on top of it, her feet wouldn't even touch the ground!
"Goodness me!" the bird chirped, fluttering her wings in excitement. "I’ve never seen an egg this huge. Who could have laid it?" Just then, a pair of long, fuzzy ears popped up from the tall grass. A rabbit was hopping along on his way to find a crunchy snack. He stopped in his tracks when he saw the bird staring at the mysterious object.
"Hey there! What are you doing with that giant snowball?" the rabbit asked, twitching his pink nose. "It’s not a snowball," the bird replied. "It’s an egg! I’m just wondering who in the world could have laid something so massive."
The rabbit hopped closer. He leaned in so close to the egg that his whiskers tickled the shell. He walked in a slow circle around it, sniffing carefully and tapping it with one paw. "Hmm," the rabbit whispered importantly. "Let me check. It’s thick-shelled... it’s slightly bumpy... and it’s very warm." He stood up tall and looked very serious. "My friend, this is no ordinary bird egg. This egg belongs to a crocodile!" The bird’s beak dropped open. "A crocodile? All the way out here?" Before the rabbit could answer, a loud CRACK echoed through the trees. A tiny spiderweb of lines appeared on the top of the shell. Then came a TAP-TAP-TAP from the inside.
The bird and the rabbit held their breath. With one final POP, the top of the egg flew off. Out poked a tiny, scaly green head with big, golden eyes and a very wide, toothy grin.
The baby crocodile looked at the bird, then at the rabbit, and let out a happy little squeak. He wasn't scary at all; he was the cutest baby croc they had ever seen. "Well," the rabbit chuckled, "I guess we have a new neighbor!"
