Joey the giraffe was a professional rule-breaker. While his mom always said, "Stay within the safety of the tall trees," Joey constantly peered over the horizon. He wanted an adventure that didn't involve chewing on the same old leaves every single day.
One sunny afternoon, Joey decided today was the day. He did a little "stealth wiggle" and trotted right past the invisible line that marked his home territory.
"Wow!" Joey whispered, his eyes wide. The new land felt different—the air smelled like wild sage, and the open plains seemed to go on forever. It was the most refreshing feeling in the world!
But Joey wasn’t the only one exploring. From behind a dried-up acacia tree, a hungry lion spotted him. To the lion, Joey didn't look like a brave adventurer; he looked like a giant, walking chicken nugget.
With a low growl, the lion lunged!
"Uh-oh," Joey squeaked.
His heart did a somersault as he turned to bolt. He put those long, wobbly legs into high gear, his hooves thundering against the dusty ground. The lion was fast, but Joey’s "marathon legs" were faster. With one final, giant leap, Joey crossed the border back into his own territory.
The lion skidded to a stop at the line, huffing and puffing, before finally turning away in defeat. Joey leaned against a familiar tree, catching his breath.
"Okay, Mom," Joey panted to himself with a shaky grin. "I get the point. Adventure is fun, but being home is way better than being lunch!"
