The Roar Of The Lilly Pads

Oh, I Should Be Leaving Right Now!

The Great Pond had always been a serene paradise—a haven of glittering water, gentle breezes, and lush green lily pads. But lately, peace was hard to come by.

Every afternoon, a massive elephant would rumble down the forest path and crash into the water like a falling mountain. With every thunderous step, waves washed over the bank, destroying the frogs' carefully built homes. His giant trunks quaffed half the pond's water in a single gulp, and his heavy hooves missed squishing the tiny amphibians by mere inches. The pond was no longer safe.

Desperate to save their home, the elders called an emergency late-night council atop the giant mossy rock.

"We can't fight him with strength," whispered Barnaby, a wise old bullfrog with a wrinkled throat. "He is a mountain; we are pebble-sized. But even a mountain can be shaken by the mind."

He leaned in close, outlines of curious green heads forming a tight circle around him as he laid out a daring scheme.

The next morning, a thick blanket of silver fog clung to the surface of the water. Right on cue, the heavy, rhythmic thuds of the elephant’s footsteps echoed through the trees. The ground trembled. Shadows lengthened as the giant stepped out of the tree line, yawning lazily and preparing for his morning bath.

He dipped one enormous foot into the cool water.

Suddenly, a strange hush fell over the forest. The birds stopped singing. The crickets went silent.

Three... two... one...

On Barnaby’s cue, hundreds of tiny throats swelled up at once.

"RIBBIT-CROAK-ROAAAAR!"

It wasn't a gentle chorus—it was an deafening, explosive eruption of sound. Amplified by the hollow hollows of the murky bank and echoing off the thick tree trunks, the collective screech sounded like an ancient, terrible beast awakening from the depths of the mud.

The elephant froze, his trunk hoisted halfway in mid-air. His wide ears flared out like sails.

"CROAAAK-GRAAAWR!" the invisible voice bellowed again, louder and deeper this time, vibrating right through the elephant’s chest.

Panicked, the giant looked down at the foggy, bubbling water. In his mind, a monstrous leviathan was about to swallow him whole. His eyes rolled back in sheer terror.

With a frantic, high-pitched trumpet of fright, the elephant spun around, completely abandoning his bath. He crashed back through the jungle, snapping branches and kicking up dust, running as fast as his massive legs could carry him—never to return to the pond again.

As the frantic crashing faded into the distance, a quiet ripples cleared on the water's surface. One by one, hundreds of little green heads poked up out of the lily pads, bursting into triumphant, cheerful chirps. Brains had officially beaten brawn.
