Once upon a time, a Crow stole a piece of cheese (or meat) and flew with it to a branch high up in a tree. She intended to enjoy her tasty meal in peace.
A clever and hungry Fox was passing below the tree and immediately saw the Crow and the cheese in her beak. The Fox desperately wanted the cheese for himself, so he began to think of a plan to trick the Crow.
The Fox stood at the base of the tree and called up to the Crow.
"Good day, dear Mrs. Crow!" he said with a charming smile. "How glossy your feathers are! What a magnificent bird you are! I have heard that your voice surpasses that of every other bird. If only I could hear just one song from you, I would surely call you the Queen of the Birds!"
The Crow, who was very flattered by this praise, wanted to prove to the Fox that she could sing beautifully.
Forgetting all about the cheese, she opened her beak wide to let out a loud "Caw!"
As soon as her mouth opened, the piece of cheese fell out of her beak and tumbled all the way down to the ground.
The Fox quickly snatched up the cheese and began to eat it.
Before walking away, the Fox looked up at the embarrassed Crow and said, "My dear Crow, your voice is certainly there, but where is your wit? Please learn this lesson: Do not trust flattery."
The Crow, now without her cheese, realized her mistake and promised herself she would never be tricked by sweet words again.
