One bright morning, Timothy the rat was all smiles. He had a big day planned, full of fun. He wanted to collect the best acorns for a snack, visit the old oak tree, and maybe even find a piece of lost cheese.

His path led him through the tall, green grass of the meadow. He was just starting to sing a little song to himself when he saw it. A gigantic yellow body, coiled up tight like a spring. Timothy stopped. His heart gave a little jolt. Sitting there was a rattlesnake! Timothy knew rattlesnakes very well. Every creature in the meadow knew that a rat was one of their most popular items for dinner.

Timothy began to shake. His knees felt weak. He looked at the snake's smooth, patterned scales and the dark, spooky shadow of its mouth. Just as the snake started to look his way, Timothy took a deep breath. He had to be brave.

He forced a big smile and chirped, "Oh, good morning! Wow, what a stunning outfit you're wearing today!"

The rattlesnake paused, its big, dark eye fixed on him. "Outfit?" it hissed, its voice low and deep. "It's not an outfit, you tiny little snack. This is my skin!"

"Oh, it's marvelous!" Timothy went on, trying his best to sound cheerful and not terrified. "The way those shapes run down your back, it looks very smart and grand. I wish I could look that fine."

The snake puffed out its chest a little, and the tip of its tail gave a very soft, happy chhh-chhh-chhh sound. The snake might not have worn clothes, but it was very proud of its scales. It liked hearing how good they looked.

The rattlesnake thought for a moment, then lowered its head with a grand, slithery nod. "It is rather perfect, isn't it? Well," the snake said, with a slightly warmer hiss, "I suppose if you have such excellent taste, you can go on your way. Just this once."

Timothy didn't wait to be told twice. He nodded a big thank you and scurried off, moving faster than he ever had before. He was still happy to be having his fun day, but his most favorite activity by far was simply making it home in one piece.
