Meet Percy and Pip, two best penguin pals who live in a snowy, icy world called Antarctica. They have shiny black-and-white feathers, waddle funny when they walk, and are fantastic swimmers!
Their home is a huge, thick sheet of ice that floats on the cold, blue ocean. But lately, something scary has been happening.
“Oh, Pip,” sighed Percy, peering at a large crack, “The ice is breaking up so fast! Yesterday, that whole piece just floated away like a giant ice cube in a drink.”
Pip shivered, not just from the cold. “I know, Percy. Our playground is getting smaller and smaller! If the ice keeps melting so quickly, where will we build our nests? Where will we slide and play?”
When the ice melts, it becomes water that runs into the ocean. This makes the water level in the sea go up, up, up! If this keeps happening, places all over the world might get too wet.
The main reason the ice is melting is because the whole planet is getting too warm. It’s like someone turned the temperature dial up just a little bit too high, and that little bit is making a big difference for the ice. This is called global warming.
“We need a home!” squeaked Pip. “If our home melts away, we’ll be homeless penguins!”
Percy put a flipper on his friend’s shoulder. “Don’t worry, Pip. Humans are starting to understand that they need to help keep our planet cool. If everyone works together to stop the world from getting too warm, then our beautiful, icy home can stay safe and sound for us!”
Here are a few ways kids can help save the penguins’ icy home:
