Barnaby the rabbit was nibbling on a juicy clover when he saw a very big, very grumpy sight: Barnaby the bear!
Barnaby the rabbit froze. He was a very small rabbit, and Barnaby the bear looked very, very hungry. Yikes!
But Barnaby the rabbit wasn’t just a fast runner; he was a very smart rabbit!
Quick as a wink, the little rabbit hopped behind a thick oak tree and took a very deep breath.
“HEY! MR. BEAR!” Barnaby shouted, making his voice sound much deeper than it really was.
The big bear stopped. “Who said that?” he rumbled, looking all around.
“You are standing very, very near to a Bear-Eating Monster!” the rabbit warned from behind the tree.
The bear’s eyes grew wide. A Bear-Eating Monster? That sounded terrible!
“If you put even one step forward, the monster will gobble you up! It only eats bears!” the clever rabbit called out.
Barnaby the bear didn’t wait to see if it was true. He didn’t even look twice. He turned his big, clumsy body around and ran away as fast as his legs could carry him! Thump-thump-thump!
Barnaby the rabbit peeked out from behind the oak tree. The forest was quiet again.
“Phew!” he whispered, wiping his brow with a paw. His smart trick had worked! He hopped back to his clover, munching happily, a very clever, very safe rabbit.
