In the big, green savannah lived a happy elephant family. There was Mama Eloise, who had kind, soft eyes, Papa Tembo, with his long, shiny tusks, and their little baby, a playful elephant named Pendo. Pendo loved to splash in puddles and wiggle his floppy ears. He was a very curious little one.
One morning, when the sun was just peeking over the hills, Mama Eloise woke up. She looked for Pendo, but he wasn't there! Her heart went "thump-thump-thump!" with worry.
"Tembo," she whispered to Papa Tembo. "Pendo is gone!"
Papa Tembo quickly stood up, his big body looking very worried. They called for Pendo, first in a quiet voice, then in a louder one. "Pendo! Pendo, where are you?"
Only the wind answered, rustling the leaves. The whole elephant herd helped to look. They followed Pendo's tiny footprints. The tracks led them toward the biggest tree in the whole savannah, the Great Baobab, a place Pendo was not supposed to go.
The sun got hotter and hotter as they searched. They asked a group of running ostriches if they had seen Pendo. The ostriches said they saw a baby elephant chasing a butterfly toward the watering hole. The elephants rushed there, but Pendo wasn't there. Then they asked a family of giraffes, who were eating leaves from a tall tree. The giraffes said they saw a little elephant trying to climb a rocky hill. The elephants hurried to the hill, but Pendo wasn't there either.

Just when everyone was starting to feel very sad, a wise old tortoise crawled up to them. He had seen everything. "He wasn't chasing a butterfly or climbing a hill," the tortoise said slowly. "He was running away from a big, scary noise and hid where the wind sings a song."
Mama Eloise and Papa Tembo knew what the tortoise meant. They hurried to the Great Baobab tree. The wind made a gentle, singing sound around its huge trunk.
And there he was! Pendo was snuggled up against the big tree, his little body shaking a little. He had been scared by a loud boom of thunder in the night and had run to the one place that felt big and safe.
Mama Eloise wrapped her trunk around Pendo in a big, warm hug. Papa Tembo let out a happy puff of air. The whole herd gathered around, making soft, happy rumbles. As the sun went down, the family walked home together, with Pendo's small footprints tucked right inside his parents' big ones. They were a family, all together again.
