The Great Lion sat upon his throne—a massive, sun-warmed rock overlooking the golden grasslands. He was grooming his mane when a small rabbit hopped up, kicking up a tiny cloud of dust.
"Pardon me, Your Majesty," the rabbit chirped, twitching his ears. "I’ve got some big news for you."
The Lion stopped grooming and looked down, his golden eyes glowing. "Well, don't keep me hanging, Little Bun. Is it good news or bad news?"
"Actually, it’s a bit of both," the rabbit said, shifting his weight. "Which one do you want first?"
The Lion sighed, his deep voice sounding like distant thunder. "Give me the bad news first. Let’s get the tough stuff out of the way."
"Fair enough," said the rabbit. "The bad news is that a new lion just showed up at the edge of the woods. He’s huge, he’s grumpy, and he’s telling everyone he is the true King of the Jungle. He’s headed this way right now to challenge you."
The Lion stood up, his muscles rippling. "A challenger? That is serious news indeed. I’d better get ready for a showdown." He sharpened his claws against the rock. "Alright, I'm braced for it. Now, what’s the good news?"
The rabbit did a little hop-and-spin. "The good news is that the other lion was so busy practicing his 'scary face' in a puddle that he didn't see where he was going. He tripped over a log, tumbled off the steep canyon cliff, and—poof—he’s history!"
The Lion let out a long, relieved breath and sat back down. "Wow. Talk about a lucky break! I’m glad I can keep things peaceful around here without a big scuffle. You’ve done me a huge favor, Rabbit. How can I pay you back? A trophy? A golden whistle?"
The rabbit’s nose went into overdrive. "To be honest, Your Majesty, I don't need gold. But I am starving, and I’ve had my eye on those jumbo organic carrots in the valley."
The Lion let out a booming laugh and waved a paw to his guards. "Done! Bring this messenger the biggest, crunchiest basket of carrots in the kingdom—extra greens on top!"
The rabbit headed home, dragging a basket twice his size, snacking the whole way back.
