One sunny afternoon, a big, friendly hippo was enjoying a long soak in the cool river. As he floated lazily, he spotted something unusual drifting toward him. It was a tiny red bird perched on a bobbing wooden log.
The bird looked very small and very lost. She was chirping a sad, worried song.
"Is everything okay, little friend?" the hippo asked, his deep voice making gentle ripples in the water.
The bird let out a little tweet. "Oh, Mr. Hippo! A big storm knocked my favorite tree right into the river. I fell onto this log and floated far away. Now I can’t find my mom and dad!"
The hippo gave a kind smile. "Don’t you worry," he said. "I know exactly where that big tree used to stand. Hop on my head and hold tight!"
The little bird fluttered from her log and nestled right between the hippo’s ears. With a powerful splash, the hippo began to swim upstream. Before long, they reached a familiar bend in the river.
Waiting on the shore were two very worried parent birds. When they saw their daughter riding on the hippo’s head, they chirped with joy! The little bird flew straight into their wings for a big family hug.
"Thank you, Mr. Hippo!" she called out. "You’re the best friend a bird could have."
The hippo wiggled his ears, happy to help, and headed back into the water for his afternoon nap.
