One sunny day, Hippo was lounging in his favorite pond, enjoying the cool water and humming a little tune. The dragonflies buzzed around lazily, and the trees swayed gently in the breeze.
Suddenly, two little birds landed on the hippo. They chirped excitedly, completely ignoring Hippo.
“Did you hear about Parrot’s party in the jungle next week?” the first bird, Pip, chirped.
“I did!” replied the second bird, Squeak. “But I’m not sure what to wear. Everyone’s talking about the fancy feathers contest!”
Hippo’s ears twitched. A jungle party? A fancy feather contest? It all sounded so exciting! But poor Hippo didn’t have feathers, fancy or otherwise.
He let out a big sigh, sending ripples across the pond. Pip and Squeak turned toward him.
“What’s the matter, Hippo?” asked Pip.
“Well,” said Hippo shyly, “I overheard you talking about a party and a contest. It sounds fun, but I don’t have feathers, let alone fancy ones.”
Pip and Squeak looked at each other and then at Hippo.
“You don’t need feathers to join the party, Hippo!” Squeak chirped. “And as for the contest, why not show off what makes you special? Your shiny, smooth skin glows in the sunlight—it’s just as beautiful as any feather!”
Hippo blinked. “You think so?”
“Of course!” said Pip. “You’re unique, and that’s what counts. Let’s help you get ready for the party. Maybe we can add some flower decorations to your back for extra flair!”
The three friends spent the rest of the day preparing. Pip and Squeak flew around gathering bright flowers, while Hippo practiced his best dance moves in the water. By the time the party day arrived, Hippo felt confident and excited.
At the party, Hippo’s flower decorations and joyful splashes in the jungle river impressed everyone. He even won a special prize for his originality and creativity.
From that day on, Hippo realized something important: being yourself is always the best way to shine!
