High Branch Rescue

Digital illustration of a chipmunk baring its teeth at a spotted snake in a green treetop
A chipmunk (Tamias) perches on a tree branch, issuing an alarm call to deter a nearby tree-dwelling snake.

The brave little chipmunk stood shaking on the high branch. "Stay back, snake!" it called out, baring its sharp teeth. Below him, the brown, spotted snake slithered closer through the green leaves, flicking its dark forked tongue. The poor chipmunk didn't know what to do! It was much smaller than the snake, and there was nowhere left to run.

Suddenly, a loud screech echoed from the sky. The little chipmunk looked up and gasped. The snake looked up, too, and tried to hide back into the bushes, but it was too late. An enormous eagle with great brown wings was diving straight for them!

The snake twisted and turned, but the eagle’s sharp claws were too fast. In one quick motion, the mighty bird snatched the snake right out of the tree. The chipmunk watched, wide-eyed, as the eagle carried the snake high up into the clouds. The little chipmunk was safe at last!

It took a big, deep breath and scrambled down to the safety of its burrow, making sure to avoid any other big snakes it saw. The chipmunk decided it was better to be safe than brave.
