A glossy black crow managed to find a large, delicious piece of bread. Wanting to enjoy his prize in peace, he flew up to the very top branch of a tall oak tree. "Now, I can eat all of this bread alone," the selfish crow said to himself.
A clever fox, who happened to be trotting by, spotted the crow and the bread. His stomach growled. "I must have that bread," the fox thought. He walked to the foot of the tree and looked up with a friendly grin. He had a plan to get the bread from the crow. But how can he get it because the bird is on the top of the tall tree?
"Good morning, beautiful bird!" the fox called out politely. "I have traveled from very far away just to meet you. In my woods, everyone says you have the most magnificent voice in the world. They say when you sing, even the wind stops to listen. Would you please sing just one song for me?"
The crow had never been complimented like this before. He felt a shiver of excitement. Usually, people complained about his loud cawing, but this fox seemed to truly appreciate his talent!
Eager to show off, the crow puffed out his chest and opened his beak wide to sing his loudest song. "CAW!"
The moment he opened his mouth, the bread slipped out and tumbled down through the branches. The fox, who was ready and waiting, snapped the bread out of the air and swallowed it in one gulp.
The crow was so caught up in his performance that he kept right on singing at a high pitch, unaware that his lunch—and the fox—were already gone.
