Dog And The Hedgehog

Paddy field pals

A little puppy was on very serious patrol. His job was to watch over the tall green paddy fields, making sure no birds or creatures came to eat the growing grain. The fields were wide, stretching all the way to a thick line of trees.

As he was sniffing around the muddy bank, he saw a shimmer of motion in the grass. Wait. He stopped and listened. Something was moving.

A prickly brown hedgehog popped its head out of the green stalks! Its tiny nose was twitching, and it looked a little confused.

The puppy gave a sharp "Woof!" and demanded, "Stop right there! What are you doing in the fields?"

The hedgehog stopped in its tracks. "Oh, goodness! Please don't be cross. I'm not a bird. I got lost while searching for my burrow on the other side of the tree line."

The puppy saw how scared and small the little hedgehog looked. "Well, you are a long way from the trees," he agreed.

"Could you help me find my way?" the hedgehog asked softly.

The puppy smiled. He knew the whole field by heart. He led the way, guiding the hedgehog carefully through the mud and grass until they finally reached the forest. By the time they said goodbye, they had decided to be friends, and the puppy promised to wave next time he was on patrol.
