Every afternoon, as the golden sun begins to dip toward the ocean, Captain Salty the seagull keeps a sharp eye on the horizon. From his lookout high on the pier, he scans the blue water for a familiar sight: a giant ship returning home to the harbor.
The moment he spots a vessel, Salty lets out a cheerful “Squawk!” He spreads his powerful white wings and glides through the salty mist. With a flutter and a hop, he lands perfectly on the ship’s railing.
Salty is now in charge.
The sailors all know him by name. Even though the ship has a big metal rudder, they believe Salty is the one who truly guides them home. He stands tall at the front of the boat, steering them past the bumpy waves and hidden rocks right to the safety of the dock.
What is his pay for a long day’s work? A royal feast! The cook always tosses him the best treats—bits of crackers, fresh fish, and maybe even a crust of sourdough bread.
With a full belly and a happy heart, Captain Salty tucks his head under his wing, ready to do it all again tomorrow.
