Once upon a time, in a cozy little corner under the floorboards, lived Sir Bartholomew Pumpernickel the Whiskered-Wiggle-Bottom. But his friends just called him Mr. Cheese-Sniffer McSqueak.
Mr. Cheese-Sniffer McSqueak loved two things: adventure, and breakfast!
Every morning, his big, round eyes would scan the room for yummy treats. Usually, he found tiny breadcrumbs or a slice of apple. But today, his twitches-and-sniffs nose caught the smell of something extraordinary.
He crept out into the light, and there it was—a huge, bright yellow wedge of cheese!
"Oh boy, oh boy!" squeaked Mr. Cheese-Sniffer McSqueak, rubbing his little paws together. His tummy gave a loud RUMBLE. His big buck teeth chattered with excitement. "Is this a dream? It looks like the most delicious breakfast in the whole world!"
Mr. Cheese-Sniffer McSqueak took a step forward. Tiptoe, tiptoe.
He took another step closer. Sniff, sniff!
He raised his paws, ready to take a big, happy bite.
Wait a minute!
Mr. Cheese-Sniffer McSqueak stopped right in his tracks. He blinked his wide eyes and looked very, very closely at the cheese. Something didn't seem quite right.
"Hmm," thought Mr. Cheese-Sniffer McSqueak, leaning in. "Cheese is usually soft and squishy... but this cheese has a row of shiny, sharp black teeth right down the middle!"
He stroked his long whiskers. "Real cheese doesn't bite back!" he realized. It wasn't a tasty breakfast at all—it was a clever trap painted to look like cheese!
Mr. Cheese-Sniffer McSqueak giggled, did a quick backward wiggle, and turned around. "Nice try!" he squeaked cheerfully as he scampered back toward the kitchen. "I think I'll go hunt for a real strawberry instead!"
