In the heart of the sun-drenched marsh, everyone knew Captain Snap. Snap was a crocodile with scales like armor and a toothy grin that stretched from ear to ear. For as long as the frogs could croak, Snap was the undisputed King of the River.
When Snap glided through the water, the dragonflies zoomed away. When Snap sunned himself on the muddy banks, the turtles stayed tucked in their shells. "I am the biggest, the toughest, and the toothiest!" Snap would brag, snapping at a passing bubble just for fun.
The Big Arrival But one Tuesday, the river felt different. The water didn't just ripple—it sloshed. A giant shadow fell over Snap’s favorite sunning rock.
Clomp. Squish. Splash.
Out of the tall grass stepped a creature that made Snap look like a tiny lizard. It was a Hippo named Hugo. Hugo wasn't interested in snapping or bragging; he just wanted a nice, cool bath. With a giant THUMP, Hugo stepped into the river. A wave of water washed right over Snap’s head!
The Silent Retreat Snap opened his mouth to give a mighty roar, but when he looked up... and up... and up... he saw Hugo’s massive shoulders and ears that flicked like little fans.
For the first time in his life, Snap felt very, very small. He realized that being "King" didn't mean much when someone ten times your size wanted to go for a swim.
Snap didn't make a sound. He didn't even splash. He tucked his tail, sank low into the water until only his yellow eyes were showing, and silently retreated into the reeds. He didn't look back until he found a much smaller, much quieter stream far away.
A New Rule Now, if you visit the river, you won’t hear much bragging. Hugo the Hippo is the new King, but he is a quiet king. He spends his days blowing bubbles and napping in the mud.
And as for Snap? He still thinks he’s pretty tough—but he always makes sure to check for giant footprints before he starts his day.
