The Danger in the Shallows

donkey, monkey and the croc in the river
See, who comes out?

A donkey and a monkey set out on a long journey to the far side of the forest. The morning sun was bright, and their spirits were high until a wide, murky river cut straight across their path.

"Let's just wade across," said the donkey, stepping toward the water's edge. "It looks shallow enough, and I don't want to waste time."

"Wait, my friend," cautioned the monkey, grabbing the donkey’s halter. "Haste often leads to trouble. We must think about the hidden dangers. I have a feeling crocodiles are lurking beneath the surface."

"You're being overcautious," grumbled the donkey, eager to keep moving. "If we sit around, we'll lose half the day!"

"A few minutes of patience costs us nothing," the monkey replied gently. "Let's watch and wait."

Reluctantly, the donkey agreed. The two companions ducked into a cluster of thick bushes and waited quietly. The forest fell still, save for the gentle ripple of the river.

Just as the donkey was about to complain again, the water parted. A massive crocodile glided out from the depths and hauled its armored body onto the riverbank to sunbathe, its sharp teeth glistening in the light.

The donkey gasped, taking a silent step back.

"Shh," whispered the monkey. "I told you. Had we rushed, we would have walked straight into its jaws."

Realizing how close he had come to disaster, the donkey nodded in quiet gratitude. The two friends walked upstream until they found a sturdy wooden bridge. They crossed safely and continued their journey with light hearts.

Moral: Impatience rushes into danger, but patience saves your life. Taking a moment to pause and observe can protect you from hazards you cannot see.
