The Backpacker Croc

backpacker crocodile and the cow

"Glad to meet you, Ms. Cow," said the croc with a wide, toothy grin.

The cow took a step back. She had big, brown eyes that looked at the croc with suspicion. "Who are you? I've never seen you here before," she said, her voice a little shaky. The cow had lived by this river her entire life and knew every creature in the meadow. A crocodile was certainly not one of them.

The croc saw her hesitation and quickly softened his smile. "Oh, I'm a backpacker and I roam around the world. I'm here for a while, spending time in the nearby river. I think I will like this place."

The cow looked at the small, colorful bag strapped to the croc's back. It was decorated with little patches from all over the world: a snowy mountain peak, a giant pyramid, and a tiny, detailed Eiffel Tower. She began to feel a little less scared and a lot more curious.

"You've been all over the world?" she mooed, her voice filled with wonder.

"I sure have! I've swum in the bluest oceans and seen deserts so sandy they look like gold. But I must say, your meadow is the greenest I've ever seen," the croc said kindly.

The cow’s tail gave a happy flick. She was proud of her home. "It is a nice place," she said. "The grass is sweet, and the water is cool."

"I've noticed!" said the croc. "Would you mind if I stayed here for a while? I promise to keep the river sparkling clean and tell you all my travel stories."

The cow smiled. This strange backpacker croc wasn't scary at all. In fact, he seemed quite nice. "I think you'll fit in just fine," she said.

From that day on, the cow and the croc became the best of friends. Every afternoon, the croc would tell tales of his adventures, and the cow would share secrets about the best patches of clover. The other animals in the meadow soon saw that true friendship can be found in the most unexpected places.
