Teach Them Young

Not like that, like this

Once upon a time, high up in the leafy branches of the Great Green Forest, Mama Bird stood in front of her three tiny chicks: Pip, Squeak, and Chirp.

It was time for the most important lesson of their lives—The Song School!

Mama Bird puffed out her chest, raised one wing like a conductor's baton, and cleared her throat. "Listen closely, little ones," she chirped. "A bird's song isn't just music. It is our secret language! Depending on what happens around you, you must sing the exact right note."

The chicks leaned forward, eyes wide and beaks open.

"First rule!" Mama Bird declared. "When I come back to the nest with a big, juicy worm, what do you sing?"

Pip jumped up and sang a fast, cheerful tune:

Cheep-cheep-cheep, hungry beak! Give the yum-yum food to me!

"Perfect!" cheered Mama Bird. "Now, rule number two! When a big shadow passes overhead and a hawk is near, what is the song?"

Squeak ducked his head low into the nest and whistled a tiny, quiet squeak:

Shhh-shhh-low, down we go, stay as still as a mossy stone!

"Spot on, Squeak!" Mama Bird smiled proudly. "And rule number three! When the sun comes up and it's time to tell the whole forest that this is OUR favorite tree, what do we sing?"

Chirp flapped her tiny wings, took a deep breath, and burst out with all her might:

Tirra-lirra-loo, the sky is blue, this leafy home belongs to our crew!

Mama Bird beamed with pride as all three chicks practiced their rules together—singing loud for breakfast, soft for safety, and grand for the morning sun. From that day on, no matter what happened in the forest, the three little birds always knew precisely which tune to sing!

Would you like to add another funny song rule for the chicks, like what to sing when it starts raining?
