“Hooray! We’ve found our forever home!” squeaked Pip, the littlest rat, as he and his big brother Squeak bounced into a dusty, old house. “Look, Squeak! Cobwebs for hammocks and dusty crumbs for snacks! It’s so comfy here, a perfect home!”
Squeak, who was a very serious rat (except when he wasn’t), nodded. “Indeed, Pip. No pesky cats to chase us here! We’re finally safe!” He patted a pile of old newspapers. “We have everything a rat could possibly dream of! Especially this newspaper! It’s perfect for reading about cheese!” “Nobody will ever find out about our home. We are safe from the cats and snakes,” Pip said.
One sunny morning, Pip woke up to a ROAR! BOOM! CRUNCH! “Squeak! Squeak! What’s that noise?” he squeaked, his whiskers trembling.
Squeak, who usually slept through everything, sat bolt upright, his eyes wide. “Sounds like…a giant sneeze?”
They peeked out a broken window and gasped. A huge, yellow monster with a giant shovel-nose was pushing their house! “It’s not sneezing, Squeak! It’s a…a…a house-eating monster!” Pip cried. What they saw was a bulldozer in action, taking down their home.
“A house-eating monster with a shovel-nose!” Squeak corrected, trying to sound brave. “We must escape! Before it turns our cozy cobweb hammocks into…dusty pancake hammocks!”
They dashed out the door, just as the monster gave their house a big shove. “Goodbye, crumb-filled paradise!” they shouted, waving their tiny paws.
As they ran, Pip giggled. “At least we won’t have to dust anymore!”
Squeak chuckled. “You’re right, Pip! And now we have an excuse to find a new house with even MORE crumbs!” And off they scampered, ready for their next big adventure.
