Leopold the leopard was having a very hot day. The sun was blazing, and his tongue felt like sandpaper. He wandered through the tall, swishy grass, hoping to find some cool water. Finally, he spotted a sparkling pond! It looked so inviting, with lily pads floating like green plates and pink flowers blooming on top.
"Oh, lovely!" Leopold sighed, and he crept closer. He saw a big, round hippo splashing happily in the water. A bright green frog sat on a lily pad, croaking a little song. A dragonfly with shimmering wings zipped past.
Leopold dipped his paw into the cool water. "Ahhh," he sighed, "just what I needed!"
But before he could take a big, refreshing gulp, the hippo boomed, "Hey! You're not supposed to drink water from here!"
Leopold blinked. "But... but I'm so thirsty," he said, his voice a little shaky. "Just a little sip?"
The hippo shook his big head. "No way! This is our pond. We don't want it getting all dirty with leopard slobber!"
Leopold's tummy rumbled. He was really, really thirsty. "Please?" he begged. "Just this once?"
"I said no!" the hippo roared, showing his big, white teeth. "Get out of the water, or I'll charge!"
Leopold looked at the hippo's big teeth and gulped. He didn't want to get charged! He sadly pulled his paw out of the water.
"But... but where can I get a drink?" Leopold asked, his voice small.
The hippo just shrugged and went back to splashing. The frog croaked a little louder, and the dragonfly buzzed away. Leopold looked at the beautiful, cool water, so close but so far away.
He knew he had to listen to the hippo. He turned away from the pond, his throat still dry. He walked slowly, his head hanging low.
Suddenly, he heard a gentle trickle. He followed the sound and found a tiny spring bubbling up from the ground. It was clear and cool, and it tasted delicious! Leopold drank and drank until his tummy was full and happy.
He realized that even though he didn't get to drink from the pond, he found something even better – a secret, special spring just for him! He learned that sometimes, even when things don't go your way, you can find something wonderful if you keep looking. And he also learned that it's important to respect the rules, even when you're really thirsty!
