The little lion cub was having a grand time playing in the sunny forest. His mommy lion and daddy lion had gone on a hunting trip to find some yummy food.
"Hiss, hiss, hiss..." The little lion stopped his playful pouncing. He heard a funny sound! He turned his head and saw something peeking out from a fallen tree. It was a snake! A long, yellow snake was sticking its head out and looking right at him.
The curious little lion had never seen a snake up close before. He thought it looked interesting and wiggled his paw, wanting to touch it. He reached out his little paw to grab the snake.
"Little one, stop!" hissed the snake. "If I bite you, it will hurt very, very much, and it could even make you very sick!"
"A little snake like you can hurt a big lion like me?" the baby lion giggled.
Just then, the lion's mommy and daddy came back from their hunt. When they saw their little cub playing near the snake, they rushed over quickly.
"What in the world are you doing, little one?" Daddy Lion said sternly. "Don't touch that snake! He's very poisonous. One little bite can make you terribly ill!" Mommy Lion nuzzled the cub gently, pulling his paw away.
"Oh, I'm sorry," the baby lion said, looking a little scared. "I didn't know snakes could be so dangerous."
"It's okay, dear," Mommy Lion said softly. "We have to be very careful around snakes. But look what we brought back for you! We had a very successful hunt today!" Daddy Lion proudly showed a juicy piece of meat.
The lion family sat down together and enjoyed a delicious lunch in the warm sunshine. Afterward, feeling sleepy and full, they all curled up for a nap. The yellow snake quietly slid back under the fallen tree, hidden and safe.
