A long time ago, people believed that crocodiles would weep big tears right before or while they were eating their prey (like an animal they caught). They thought the crocodile was either sad for what it was about to do, or crying to trick other animals into thinking it was safe to come closer!
It’s not because they are sad! When a crocodile gulps down its lunch, sometimes air gets trapped in the special tubes (called sinuses) near its eyes. This air pushes out salty water, making it look like they are shedding big, salty tears. It's like when you get water in your eye when you blow your nose too hard!
